He began his career in 1980. He worked as a mechanic, then a master of Chelyabinsk pipe rolling plant.
In 1982-1984 - head of the organizational Department of the Lenin district Committee of the Komsomol of Chelyabinsk.
From 1984 to 1990, Sergei Sobyanin was at the leading party and Soviet work in the Khanty‑Mansi Autonomous district of the Tyumen region.
In 1990-1991-head of the state tax Inspectorate in Kogalym, Khanty‑Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
From 1991 to 1993 he was the head of the administration of the city of Kogalym.

In 1993-1994 Sobyanin worked as the first Deputy head of the administration of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.
Since 1994 - Chairman of the Duma of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, member of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly. Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on constitutional law and judicial matters.
In 2000-2001 Sobyanin was the first Deputy Plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Ural Federal district.
From 2001 to 2005, Sergei Sobyanin was Governor of the Tyumen region.
Since November 2005 - head of the presidential administration.
On may 12, 2008, he was Deputy Prime Minister and chief of staff of the Russian government.
From October 21, 2010 to the present-work as Mayor of Moscow
